Together In Christ – Week 4 Day 3

WEEK 4 // DAY 3

LOVE THAT FOLLOWS

Read John 13:12-17

After washing His disciples’ feet, Jesus puts His robe back on and looks around the room. The basin drips quietly. The towel hangs limp. The disciples sit speechless. Then Jesus asks a piercing question: “Do you understand what I have done for you?” They probably didn’t — not yet. Because this wasn’t just a lesson in good manners; it was a call to a new way of life.

Jesus doesn’t just serve; He calls His followers to serve as He has done. He says, “I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.” The word “example” means more than just imitation. It means a pattern, a template for life. Following Jesus means tracing His movements — going where He goes, doing what He does, and loving how He loves.

What’s remarkable is that Jesus links blessing to obedience. He says, “Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.” In God’s kingdom, joy is found not in being served but in serving. When you love like Jesus, you discover the deep gladness of giving yourself away. This is not drudgery; it’s the freedom of humility. The world chases comfort and recognition. Jesus calls us to joy through self-giving love.

Every act of service — whether seen or unseen — echoes this upper room moment. When you forgive a friend, carry a burden, or show up for someone in quiet faithfulness, you are washing feet. You are saying with your life, “I have been loved by Jesus, and I want you to see Him through me.” It’s in those ordinary moments that His extraordinary love shines brightest.

Jesus’ question still lingers: “Do you understand what I have done for you?” To understand means to internalize it — to let His love reshape your instincts, habits, and relationships. You can’t follow Jesus and cling to pride. You can’t kneel before others and still demand your own way. But when you follow His example, you experience a freedom that the world can’t comprehend — the freedom of love that serves, even when it costs something.

Reflection Questions:

  • What stands out to you about Jesus’ question, “Do you understand what I have done for you?”
  • How does serving others reflect the heart of Jesus?
  • In what ways do you tend to resist serving when it’s inconvenient?
  • What specific act of love can you follow Jesus in this week?

Journaling Prompt:

Write about one person God may be calling you to serve today. Reflect on how following Jesus’ example could bring joy and reveal His love through you.

Prayer Starter:
Jesus, thank You for showing me what love looks like. Teach me to follow Your example with humility and joy, and to serve others the way You have served me.
