WEEK 4 // DAY 2

NOT LEFT AS ORPHANS

Read John 14:15-27

“I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.” (John 14:18)

Jesus used tender family language when describing the Spirit’s coming: “I will not leave you as orphans.” An orphan is vulnerable, unprotected, and unsure of belonging. Jesus wanted His disciples to know that through the Spirit, they would never be abandoned children.

This is more than comfort—it’s identity. The Spirit not only dwells with us but assures us that we belong to the Father. Paul says in Romans 8:16, “The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.” The Spirit’s presence is God’s adoption certificate written on our hearts.

Think about how transformative this is. Fear often whispers, “You’re on your own. No one sees you. You don’t belong.” But the Spirit counters with truth: “You are loved. You are secure. You are mine.” This assurance is not based on our feelings but on God’s promise.

And notice that Jesus says, “I will come to you.” The Spirit is not a substitute teacher filling in for Jesus. He is the very presence of Christ with us. Through Him, we experience the nearness of the Son and the love of the Father.

You are not an orphan. You are not alone. You are a beloved child of God with the Spirit as your daily reminder.

Reflection Questions:

  • What emotions rise when you hear Jesus’ promise, “I will not leave you as orphans”?
  • How does the Spirit assure you of your identity as God’s child?
  • What lies of abandonment or insecurity do you need to replace with God’s truth today?
  • How could resting in your identity as God’s child change how you face challenges?

Journaling Prompt:

Write about what it means to you personally that you are not an orphan but a child of God through the Spirit.

Prayer Starter:
Thank God that you belong to Him and ask the Spirit to deepen your confidence in your identity as His child.
