Unmatched – Week 1 Day 1
WEEK 1 // DAY 1
THE ETERNAL WORD
Read John 1:1-18
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
John begins his Gospel with a profound declaration that sets Jesus apart from all other historical figures: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” This tells us two crucial things—first, Jesus is eternal; He existed before time began. He is not a created being but fully God, co-eternal and co-equal with the Father. Second, Jesus is intimately involved in creation; everything was made through Him. His existence is foundational to all reality.
Understanding Jesus as the eternal Word is essential because only someone who is fully God could bridge the gap between a holy God and sinful humanity. Jesus isn’t a distant or abstract deity. He is the living God who entered history to redeem us. His divine nature means He holds ultimate authority, power, and wisdom—qualities no mere human or angel possesses.
This identity matters deeply for our faith. If Jesus were only a great teacher or prophet, His death and resurrection wouldn’t have the power to save. But because He is fully God, His sacrifice has infinite value. Today, as you reflect on the eternal nature of Jesus, consider how it shapes your trust and worship. He is timeless, unchanging, and utterly reliable.
Let this truth sink in: the Word who was with God and was God is the very same Jesus who knows your name, loves you personally, and invites you into relationship. He is unmatched in all creation.
Reflection Questions:
- What does it mean to you that Jesus existed before time began?
- How does His role in creation deepen your sense of His authority?
- Why is it significant that only God Himself could bring us back into relationship with the Father?
- In what ways does the eternal nature of Jesus give you confidence in uncertain times?
Journaling Prompt:
Take time today to rest in the reality that Jesus is eternal God. Write about how His unchanging nature draws you into deeper trust, worship, and reliance on Him in your daily life.
Thank Jesus for being the eternal Word, fully God, who loves you personally and saves you completely.
