Summer in the Psalms

WEEK 3 // DAY 4

BE STILL AND KNOW

Read Psalm 46

“Be still, and know that I am God…”

This is perhaps the most well-known verse in Psalm 46—and for good reason. It’s God’s own voice interrupting the psalm, issuing both a command and an invitation. “Be still…” means more than ceasing activity. It means to surrender, to release our grip, to stop striving. And “know that I am God” is a call to remember who holds the world.

Stillness isn’t natural in a world of constant motion. Our minds run, our schedules fill, our hearts race. But in the stillness, God reminds us: He is exalted. He is in control. He will be known. This is not passive resignation—it’s active trust.

Jesus modeled this perfectly. Again and again, He withdrew to quiet places to be with the Father. Even in chaos, He walked with stillness and purpose. And on the cross, as He gave His final breath, He trusted the Father’s will completely. That same stillness is now available to you through the Spirit.

Reflection Questions:

  • What prevents you from being still—physically, emotionally, or spiritually?
  • How does God’s sovereignty help you surrender your need for control?
  • What truths about God do you need to “know” more deeply today?
  • How can stillness become a spiritual rhythm in your life?

Journaling Prompt:

Describe an area in your life where God may be inviting you to stop striving and trust more deeply.

Prayer Starter:
Pray for the courage to be still. Ask God to meet you in your quiet places and remind you that He is enough.
