Summer in the Psalms

WEEK 3 // DAY 1

GOD IS OUR REFUGE

Read Psalm 46

We begin Psalm 46 with a declaration—not a plea, not a wish, but a statement of fact: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” There is something unshakeable about this verse. It assumes trouble will come. It doesn’t offer protection from all hardship, but refuge in it. God doesn’t promise to remove the storm but to be our shelter within it.

In Hebrew, “refuge” is a place of safety and trust, like a fortress that cannot be breached. It’s not a temporary escape but a stronghold in which we dwell. The psalmist doesn’t just describe God as a refuge, but our refuge. There’s intimacy here. This isn’t about theory; it’s about experience.

Jesus embodies this refuge. He did not avoid suffering but entered into it with us. In fact, the cross is the ultimate picture of God entering our trouble. The resurrection, then, becomes the ultimate declaration: no trouble can overpower the One who conquered death. The Holy Spirit now applies that victory to our lives, making God’s help ever-present—not just nearby, but indwelling.

Reflection Questions:

  • What troubles feel closest to you right now?
  • In what ways do you instinctively look for refuge elsewhere?
  • What does it mean for God to be your refuge today?
  • How does Jesus redefine strength in the midst of weakness?

Journaling Prompt:

Describe a time in your life when you experienced God as your refuge. What did He teach you in that season?

Prayer Starter:
Ask the Lord to deepen your trust in Him as your shelter. Name the areas where you need His refuge today.
