WEEK 4 // DAY 2

LOVE THAT PAYS THE PRICE

Read Hosea 3:1-5

Hosea obeys God’s command to pursue Gomer, but what happens next is surprising. When he finds her, he does not simply bring her home. Instead, he pays a price to redeem her.

The language in this verse suggests a slave market. Gomer appears to have fallen so deeply into brokenness and exploitation that she is now being sold. In that moment, Hosea does something remarkable—he buys his own wife back.

Redemption always involves a cost. In the ancient world, redemption meant paying a price to set someone free from slavery or debt. Hosea’s payment—silver and barley—was roughly the value of a slave. His love for Gomer moved him to absorb that cost so she could be restored. This moment points directly to the heart of the gospel.

The Bible teaches that humanity is enslaved by sin. Our rebellion separates us from God and traps us in patterns we cannot escape on our own. But God does not leave us in that condition. Instead, He provides redemption. Yet redemption requires a price.

The New Testament tells us that Jesus paid that price for us. 1st Peter reminds us that we were not redeemed with silver or gold but with the precious blood of Christ. At the cross, Jesus took our sin upon Himself and paid the full cost of our redemption. The cross reveals the depth of God’s love. Jesus did not simply forgive from a distance; He entered into our brokenness and paid the price Himself. His sacrifice brings freedom from guilt, shame, and the power of sin.

When you reflect on this truth, grace becomes even more meaningful. You are forgiven not because sin is small but because Christ’s sacrifice is great. The Redeemer who pursued you was willing to pay the ultimate price to bring you home.

Reflection Questions:

  • Whaaction does Hosea take to redeem Gomer?
  • Why does redemption always involve a cost?
  • How does Hosea’s act of redemption point to Jesus and the cross?
  • How can remembering the price Jesus paid shape the way you live today?

Journaling Prompt:

Write about what it means to you personally that Jesus paid the price for your redemption. Reflect on how His sacrifice changes the way you see grace and forgiveness.

Prayer Starter:
Thank Jesus for paying the price to redeem you, and ask Him to help you live with gratitude for the freedom His sacrifice has given you.
