Love Unending – Week 1 Day 1

WEEK 1 // DAY 1
WHEN GOD SPEAKS INTO OUR DRIFT
Read Hosea 1:1-2:1
The book of Hosea begins quietly. There is no thunder, no lightning, no dramatic introduction. Just a simple statement: “The word of the Lord that came to Hosea.” But what follows is anything but simple.
God tells Hosea to marry a woman who will be unfaithful. It’s a command that shocks us, and it likely would have shocked Hosea as well. God is asking him to step into a relationship that will bring heartbreak, confusion, and public embarrassment. Why would God ask such a thing?
Because God is about to show His people something they have refused to see. Israel has been drifting spiritually. They still carry the name of God’s people. They still have their religious traditions. But their hearts are far from Him. They are trusting idols, alliances, wealth, and pleasure instead of the God who rescued them.
So God chooses a living illustration. Hosea’s marriage becomes a mirror. Through it, God shows Israel what their relationship with Him has become.
We often imagine spiritual drift as something dramatic. We think it looks like open rebellion or public scandal. But more often, drift is quiet. It’s subtle. It happens slowly. It looks like prayer becoming occasional instead of daily. Scripture becoming a duty instead of a delight. God becoming an afterthought instead of a priority. Trust shifting from God to money, plans, or people.
Drift doesn’t usually feel like betrayal. It feels like busyness. Distraction. Fatigue. Responsibility. But from God’s perspective, it is deeply personal. The language of Hosea reminds us that God sees our relationship with Him not as a contract, but as a marriage.
And when our hearts move away from Him, it hurts Him. Yet even here, in this painful moment, God is not silent. He is still speaking. The very fact that He sends Hosea shows His love. He is not done with His people. He is pursuing them, even in their drift.
The same is true for us. If God were done with us, He would simply walk away. But He doesn’t. He speaks. He convicts. He calls. He invites.
His voice is not proof of His anger. It is proof of His love.
Reflection Questions:
- Where in your life have you noticed signs of spiritual drift?
- What tends to pull your attention and affection away from God?
- How have you experienced God speaking to you recently?
- Why do you think God uses such strong relational language to describe our sin?
Journaling Prompt:
Write honestly about the current state of your relationship with God. Where do you feel close to Him? Where do you feel distant?
“God, I don’t want to drift from You without realizing it. Open my eyes to where my heart has wandered, and draw me back to You.”
