WEEK 1 // DAY 2

LEAVING THE NETS

Read Matthew 4:18-22

Following Jesus always involves leaving something behind. James and John don’t just leave fishing gear; they leave family expectations, security, and a familiar future. Nets represent livelihood, identity, and control—everything that made sense before Jesus stepped into the picture.

Jesus never minimizes the cost of discipleship. He doesn’t pretend that following Him requires no sacrifice. But He also doesn’t frame obedience as loss alone. What you leave behind is always less than what you gain. When you follow Jesus, you are not abandoning life—you are stepping into a truer one.

This passage reminds you that discipleship is deeply personal. What Jesus asks you to release may look different from someone else’s nets. It could be control, comfort, approval, or a version of success that no longer fits a life shaped by Christ. The invitation is not to reckless abandonment, but to trusting surrender.

Jesus doesn’t force James and John to leave. He invites them. And they respond freely, decisively, and imperfectly. That same freedom is extended to you. Following Jesus is not about having your life fully figured out—it’s about trusting Him enough to loosen your grip on what once defined you.

Reflection Questions:

  • What do James and John leave behind when they follow Jesus?
  • Why is leaving part of genuine discipleship?
  • What “nets” might be hardest for you to release?
  • How might trusting Jesus reshape your understanding of security?

Journaling Prompt:

Write honestly about something you’re holding tightly. Invite Jesus into that place and imagine what surrender could look like.

Prayer Starter:
Jesus, show me what I’m clinging to more than You. Give me courage to trust You with what I release.
