Invited By Jesus – Week 1 Day 1

WEEK 1 // DAY 1

A SIMPLE INVITATION

Read Matthew 4:18-22

Jesus begins discipleship with astonishing simplicity. There is no résumé review, no spiritual test, no explanation of where this path will lead. Jesus simply looks at two ordinary men in the middle of an ordinary workday and says, “Follow me.” It’s an invitation, not a demand—and yet it carries the weight of a complete life reorientation.

What’s striking is where Jesus meets them. Peter and Andrew are not praying in a synagogue or seeking spiritual clarity. They are working. Sweaty. Focused on what puts food on the table. And right there—into the middle of normal life—Jesus speaks a word that changes everything. Discipleship begins not when life is settled, but when Jesus interrupts our routines with His presence.

To follow Jesus means more than believing He exists or admiring His teaching. It means allowing Him to set the direction of your life. Jesus doesn’t invite Peter and Andrew to add Him to their existing plans; He invites them into a new way of living altogether. Following always involves movement—leaving something behind to walk toward Someone greater.

This invitation still stands. Jesus meets you in the middle of your ordinary days and speaks the same words: Follow me. You may not know where He will lead or how everything will change, but you can trust the One who calls you. Apprenticeship begins with a step—not certainty.

Reflection Questions:

  • What is happening in Peter and Andrew’s lives when Jesus calls them?
  • What does Jesus’ invitation reveal about how discipleship begins?
  • Where might Jesus be meeting you in the middle of ordinary life?
  • What would it look like to take a first step in following Him today?

Journaling Prompt:

Take time to reflect on where Jesus may be interrupting your routine. Write about what it would mean to respond with trust rather than hesitation.

Prayer Starter:
Jesus, thank You for meeting me where I am. Help me respond to Your invitation with trust and obedience.
