WEEK 2 // DAY 3

GOD IS AT WORK IN WHAT YOU CAN’T EXPLAIN

Read Matthew 1:18-24

God’s explanation to Joseph was simple yet profound: what looked humanly impossible was actually God’s doing. Joseph saw confusion; God saw redemption. Joseph felt the sting of uncertainty; God was announcing salvation. This is how God often works—right in the middle of situations that don’t make sense to you. Advent invites you to believe that when life feels most confusing, God may be doing His most significant work.

The Holy Spirit was moving long before Joseph realized it. And the Spirit is still moving in ways you cannot see. Just because you don’t understand what God is doing doesn’t mean He has stopped working. In fact, moments of confusion often reveal that God is at work on a deeper level, preparing something that will one day bring joy, clarity, and purpose. Joseph learned that God’s most miraculous works often begin in hidden places.

God also gives Joseph a name: Jesus. The name means “The Lord saves.” Before Joseph understood the details, God gave him the heart of the story—salvation was coming. In your confusion, God often gives you the same gift: not a full explanation, but a reminder of who He is. He is still Savior. Still Redeemer. Still Emmanuel. His identity anchors you when your circumstances feel unsteady.

This passage reminds us that confusion is not the end of the story. God is always working toward salvation, healing, and hope. Even when you can’t trace His hand, you can trust His heart. The God who brought salvation through Joseph’s greatest confusion can bring life, meaning, and purpose through yours as well. He is closer than you think—especially when nothing makes sense.

Reflection Questions:

  • What does God’s explanation reveal about how He works in confusing circumstances?
  • How does the name “Jesus” encourage you in your current situation?
  • Where might the Holy Spirit be working in ways you cannot see right now?
  • How can you trust God’s heart even when you don’t understand His plan?

Journaling Prompt:

Write about a confusing situation you’re facing and reflect on how Jesus’ identity as Savior brings stability and hope.

Prayer Starter:
Jesus, remind me that You are working even in the places I can’t explain. Strengthen my trust in Your saving work today.
