WEEK 4 // DAY 1

LOVE THAT KNEELS

Read John 13:1-5

The final night of Jesus’ earthly life begins with something shockingly humble. Before the cross, before the betrayal, before the resurrection — Jesus kneels. The Creator of the universe bends down to wash the dusty feet of His disciples. This moment is not just about hygiene; it’s a living sermon on love. It’s love that stoops low. It’s love that serves even those who will fail Him in the hours ahead.

John tells us that Jesus “knew that the Father had put all things under his power.” In other words, Jesus had every right to demand service — but instead, He chose to serve. The all-powerful Son of God picks up a towel, not a throne. The One who holds galaxies in His hand now holds dirty feet in His fingers. This is what love looks like. It is not abstract or sentimental. It’s embodied, costly, and practical.

The phrase “He loved them to the end” can also mean “He loved them to the fullest.” Jesus doesn’t love halfway or with conditions. His love is complete, constant, and relentless — the kind that doesn’t flinch when people disappoint Him. Peter will deny Him. Judas will betray Him. The rest will scatter. Yet Jesus loves them still. His kneeling shows that true greatness in God’s kingdom looks like servanthood, not status.

When you love like Jesus, it changes how you see others. You begin to look for ways to kneel — not literally, perhaps, but through small, unseen acts of service that reflect God’s heart. Love might look like listening patiently, forgiving quickly, or stepping into someone else’s mess without needing recognition. It’s the opposite of pride; it’s love on its knees.

Jesus’ act was more than an example — it was a revelation. This is how God loves you. He kneels toward you. He washes away your sin. He meets you in the grime of life and makes you clean. When you receive that kind of love, you’re freed to share it. The world doesn’t recognize Jesus by our power, programs, or platforms. It recognizes Him by this: humble, towel-carrying love.

Reflection Questions:

  • What stands out to you about Jesus’ humility in washing the disciples’ feet?
  • How does Jesus redefine what greatness means in the kingdom of God?
  • When have you experienced someone showing you Christlike service?
  • What’s one way you can “pick up the towel” and serve someone this week?

Journaling Prompt:

Take time to write about how Jesus has served you personally. Reflect on what it means that the King of heaven would stoop down for you.

Prayer Starter:
Thank Jesus for loving you with humility and grace. Ask for His help to love others the same way — with a towel in hand and a servant’s heart.
