Together In Christ – Week 2 Day 3
WEEK 2 // DAY 3
TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR OUR BACKPACK
Read Galatians 6:1-10
At first glance, Paul’s words here may sound like a contradiction. He tells us to bear one another’s burdens, and then he says each should carry their own load. But Paul is not confused—he is pointing to a balance. We are called to support one another, but we are also called to personal responsibility.
The word Paul uses for “load” is different from the “burden” earlier. A burden is a crushing weight that cannot be carried alone. A load, on the other hand, is like a backpack—something God has given each of us to steward. Your personal load may include your responsibilities, gifts, or calling. These are yours to carry faithfully, even as others support you when the weight becomes overwhelming.
In community, this balance is essential. If we neglect our load, we risk expecting others to do for us what God has entrusted to us. On the other hand, if we refuse help with our burdens, we isolate ourselves and miss the gift of shared life. Together in Christ means embracing both: taking responsibility for what God has given us, while being humble enough to share the heavy burdens we cannot carry alone.
Living this way cultivates maturity and interdependence. It teaches us that faith is not passive but active. You are called to steward your own walk with Jesus—spending time in His Word, praying, serving, and growing. At the same time, you are called to walk closely enough with others to know when to lend or receive help. This rhythm of responsibility and support strengthens the church and glorifies Christ.
Reflect today on what God has entrusted to you. Are you carrying your own load faithfully? Are you also willing to both give and receive support in times of heavier burdens? Life together in Christ is healthiest when both are embraced.
Reflection Questions:
- How does Paul distinguish between burdens and loads?
- Why is personal responsibility important in community?
- Are you faithfully carrying what God has entrusted to you?
- How can you balance responsibility with interdependence this week?
Journaling Prompt:
Write about the specific “backpack” God has given you to carry. Reflect on how you can be faithful in this while staying open to the support of others.
Ask Jesus for wisdom to carry your load faithfully and humility to share burdens when needed.
