Summer in the Psalms

WEEK 8 // DAY 2

AGAINST YOU ALONE

“Against you, you only, have I sinned…”

This verse may sound strange. Didn’t David sin against Bathsheba? Against Uriah? Against Israel? Yes. But David recognizes the root of all sin is rebellion against God. Sin is never just horizontal—it’s vertical. That’s what makes it so serious.

We tend to minimize sin by comparing it to others’ or focusing only on its earthly consequences. But sin offends the holiness of God. It puts self at the center and dethrones the Creator. David’s words here show deep awareness: he’s not just sorry he got caught—he’s broken over how he grieved the heart of God.

Jesus reframes this conversation when He teaches about sin in the Sermon on the Mount. He moves from actions to intentions—lustful thoughts, angry words, hidden motives. His point? We all need clean hearts, not just clean hands. Only He can give that.

Reflection Questions:

  • How do you typically define or understand sin?
  • Why is it important to see sin as ultimately against God?
  • In what areas of your life are you tempted to minimize sin?
  • How does this view of sin increase your gratitude for Jesus?

Journaling Prompt:

Write a prayer of confession, naming specific areas where you’ve drifted from God’s heart. Don’t rush—be honest.

Prayer Starter:
Ask God to give you a deeper sensitivity to sin—not to bring shame, but to draw you closer to His holiness and grace.
