Summer in the Psalms – Week 7 Day 1
WEEK 7 // DAY 1
REMEMBERING GOD’S STEADFAST LOVE
Psalm 136 opens and closes with the same words: “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.” Twenty-six verses, twenty-six repetitions of the same refrain. Why?
Because we forget.
When life gets hard, we forget God’s goodness. When we’re busy, we forget His presence. When we’re wounded, we question His love. Psalm 136 is God’s gentle insistence: “Remember Me. Remember what I’ve done. Remember how I’ve loved.”
In Hebrew, the word for “steadfast love” is hesed—a covenantal, loyal, enduring, never-quitting kind of love. It’s not sentiment; it’s substance. This is the love that moves God to create, to rescue, to remain faithful even when His people rebel.
In Jesus, we see the ultimate display of hesed. The God who delivered Israel from Egypt is the same God who came to deliver us from sin and death. And His love? It hasn’t changed. It endures forever.
Reflection Questions:
- Why do you think the psalm repeats the phrase “His steadfast love endures forever” so many times?
- What parts of God’s goodness are easiest for you to forget?
- How does the cross of Christ reveal God’s enduring love?
- Where do you most need to remember God’s faithfulness today?
Journaling Prompt:
Write down a list of moments in your life where you have experienced God’s steadfast love. Then write a prayer of thanks.
Thank God for His enduring love. Ask Him to help you see His hand at work in your life today, especially in ordinary moments.
