Summer in the Psalms – Week 3 Day 3
WEEK 3 // DAY 3
THERE IS A RIVER
Read Psalm 46
“There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells.”
In the middle of a psalm about earthquakes and storms, the imagery suddenly shifts to a river—a symbol of peace, provision, and life. This river isn’t chaotic—it’s controlled and purposeful. It brings joy to the city of God. It nourishes His people. This is the contrast between the chaos of the world and the calm within God’s presence.
In the ancient Near East, a river running through a city meant survival. For Jerusalem, which had no major river, this image is symbolic—it points to God Himself as their source of life. In Ezekiel’s vision (Ezekiel 47), and later in Revelation (22), we see a river flowing from God’s throne, giving life to all it touches.
Jesus echoes this image when He says in John 7: “Whoever believes in me… rivers of living water will flow from within them.” He was speaking of the Holy Spirit. God’s presence in us is not just for refuge—it’s for renewal. He doesn’t just protect—He provides.
Reflection Questions:
- What “rivers” of grace or joy has God brought into your life?
- How is the Holy Spirit refreshing your soul right now?
- What does it mean for you to dwell where God dwells?
- How can you be a source of God’s joy and life to others this week?
Journaling Prompt:
Write a description of a place where you feel God’s peace most tangibly. Compare it with the “river” described here.
Invite the Holy Spirit to refresh and fill you today. Ask God to let His peace flow through your life like a river.
