Summer in the Psalms

WEEK 2 // DAY 3

LIKE A TREE PLANTED BY WATER

Read Psalm 1

“That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season…”

The life of someone rooted in God’s Word is like a tree that has a secret source of strength. It doesn’t depend on the weather. It draws life from below, from hidden streams. That’s the picture of a flourishing life—steady, fruitful, and resilient. The fruit may not be immediate. But in season, it comes.

The world often measures success by output, busyness, or applause. But Psalm 1 invites us to think in terms of rootedness. Trees don’t panic. They don’t scramble. They grow. Slowly, deeply. A tree planted near water can survive drought. Why? Because it’s not dependent on surface-level conditions.

Jesus uses similar imagery in John 15: “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me… you will bear much fruit.” Rooted in Him, we draw living water through the Holy Spirit. This fruit is not just activity—it’s love, joy, peace, and all that flows from a life surrendered to God.

Reflection Questions:

  • Are you more focused on producing fruit or deepening your roots?
  • What season of life are you in right now—fruitful, dry, waiting?
  • How do you experience the Holy Spirit as your inner source of life?
  • What would it mean to “plant yourself” near streams of living water this week?

Journaling Prompt:

Describe the kind of fruit you hope your life produces—and what might need to change in order for that fruit to grow in season.

Prayer Starter:
Pray for deep roots in God’s Word and ask the Spirit to help you abide in Christ so that fruit can grow in His timing.
