Summer in the Psalms

WEEK 2 // DAY 1

THE WAY OF THE BLESSED

Read Psalm 1

Psalm 1 begins with a bold declaration: “Blessed is the one…” It sets the stage for a kind of life that is full, purposeful, and firmly rooted in God. This is not a shallow blessing like a lucky break or a good fortune. It’s the deep satisfaction of a life that is aligned with God’s purposes. It’s not circumstantial—it’s spiritual.

The psalmist tells us what the blessed person doesn’t do: they don’t walk in the counsel of the wicked, stand in the way of sinners, or sit in the seat of mockers. Notice the progression—walking, standing, sitting. It’s the slow drift into comfort with sin. The blessed person resists that drift. Why? Because their heart is anchored in something deeper: delight in the law of the Lord.

Jesus, in His Sermon on the Mount, echoes this very idea when He begins with, “Blessed are…” He’s not offering good advice—He’s describing the good life found in God’s kingdom. The way of blessing is not the path of self-fulfillment or popularity. It’s the way of rootedness in the Word and nearness to the Shepherd.

Reflection Questions:

  • How would you define “blessing” in your life?
  • Are there any voices or influences shaping you away from God’s truth?
  • What habits move you toward God—or away from Him?
  • How does the example of Jesus help you understand this “blessed” life?

Journaling Prompt:

Write a description of what a “blessed” life looks like for you, and compare it to the vision of Psalm 1.

Prayer Starter:
Ask the Lord to shape your definition of blessing. Thank Him for showing you a different path through His Word.
